Background:
Since 1995 the Texas Air Command Museum, an established 501(c)(3), has owned and operated UH-1H Aircraft 65-10091. Keeping a nearly forty year old "experimental" aircraft operational is no small task; it requires significant support in the form of both monetary and personal contributions and sacrifices. Fortunately, through the tireless efforts and unwavering passion of a select few, 091 was able to participate in many veteran related events. For the past eight years, she has visited schools and universities; veterans' reunions; air shows; and participated in the filming of a documentary.

In early 2002, the enormous expense of operating 091 forced the TACM to come to a difficult conclusion: the cost of operation had exceeded the capabilities of the museum. As 091 continued her missions, a search for a suitable organization to continue the care of this fine warbird began. In May 2003, two of our committee members received word through Fort Rucker, Alabama, that a suitable recipient organization was looking for a UH-1 helicopter representative of a Vietnam era slick to be put on display within their collection, to be displayed for years to come. After extensive coordination between the committee, other organizations associated with 091, and the recipient organization; an agreement was reached that facilitated the donation of the helicopter. One of the key elements of this agreement was that the donation of this helicopter be completely philanthropic in nature. Now the challenge was to find funding to allow the TACM to donate the aircraft free and clear. Fortunately a donor came forward that recognized the significance of this helicopter and what it represents to millions of veterans; the magnitude of the exhibit in which it would be displayed; the educational impact of this exhibit; and that this helicopter's journey should not benefit anyone or any organization monetarily.

With funding intact, a mission plan was formulated that would take this helicopter to key locations in support of our mission statement. These locations will educate, honor, and pay tribute to all of our veterans and civilians who's service and sacrifice allow us to enjoy the freedoms that we hold in such high regard.
